ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Bernalillo County Commissioners are meeting Tuesday evening to discuss a number of topics including an increase in fire restrictions.
That includes banning open fires, campfires and smoking in the vulnerable areas of Bernalillo County.
For it to pass, it must be demonstrated to commissioners that extreme or severe drought conditions exist.
This will include areas near the Bosque throughout the county, parts of the east mountains and unincorporated parts of the city east of Louisiana Boulevard to the slopes of the Sandia Mountains and north to the Sandia Reservation.
"The fire marshal really makes the determination that fire restrictions are needed and so we go before the commission for two reasons, one so the commission knows we're doing it and we get their approval and two to actually put it on public record," says Larry Gallegos with the Bernalillo County Fire Department.
One of the other restrictions that fire officials say will be banned includes ceremonial fires for Native Americans. They cannot be lit anywhere in the county except on reservation land. If someone is caught lighting them in their own yard or anywhere but tribal property they can be fined.
If it's approved, there will be no burning under the following situations:
- Above ground detonation
- Agricultural Burning
- Bon fires
- Controlled Burning
- Heating Fires
- Open burning
- Hot torch burning
- Open flames
- Timber / Forest Management
- Slash piles
- Weed Burning
- Any cooking on grills or stoves
