Weather Underground midday recap for Sunday, September 22, 2013.
A cold front moved over the Great Basin and northern Rockies on Sunday, while a separate, extensive cold front provided wet weather for the Eastern Seaboard.
Flash flood warnings were issued in Utah and parts of Colorado on Sunday as strong thunderstorms associated with a cold front boundary moved over the Great Basin. Flood zones in the central Rockies remained most vulnerable to flash floods due to recent flooding in the region. Meanwhile in the Pacific Northwest, a low pressure system continued to bring rain to western Washington, western Oregon, and the northwest tip of California. High wind watches were issued in northwest Montana as a result this low pressure system. The northern Cascades also experienced snow showers at high elevations. The Southwest remained warm and dry, although temperatures stayed below 100 degrees in the southern California and Arizona deserts.
High pressure over the Great Lakes provided clear conditions to the majority of the Great Plains, while further East, a cold front brought wet weather to the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida all experienced rain and thunderstorms due to the slow moving, southern portion of the cold front. Further north, the same cold front lingered along the Eastern Seaboard, which brought rain to the New England and Mid-Atlantic coasts. Maine, as well as parts of eastern North Carolina and eastern Virginia, continued to experience wet weather through the early afternoon hours on Sunday.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of 26 degrees at Crane Lake, Minn. to a midday high of 91 degrees at Pine Ridge, S.D.
