ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Heavy flooding late Friday collapses a section of U.S. Highway 491 shutting down a main route in northwestern New Mexico.
The washout happened near mile marker 44 between Sheep Springs and Naschitti forcing the road to be closed at least through Sunday, according to the New Mexico Department of Transportation.
U.S. 491 is the connects Gallup on Interstate 40 and Shiprock in the Four Corners.
NMDOT reported the flooding damaged drainage pipe and collapsed a section of pavement.
It is expected to take until late Sunday and possibly some time on Monday before a detour around the washout can be built. Permanent repairs will take longer.
In the meantime NMDOT is suggested State Road 371 as an alternative. It connects Farmington east of Shiprock with Thoreau east of Gallup.
