ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A lot of Lobo fans woke up smiling Sunday morning, even though their team did not win Saturday night's game against 24th ranked Boise State.
It is not very often a loss on the football field can be considered good news but Saturday night's Lobo game was and fans are pumped.
"It's a step in the right direction.... It's a good loss in a sense. A loss is a loss, but it's a good loss against a quality team like Boise," Joe Storey said.
After being down 25 to 0 at halftime, the Lobos narrowed the gap to three points by the end of the game.
The final score was a nail biter, 32 to 29.
The football team had a ton of support too.
More than 28,000 people attended the game, almost double the fans who showed up for some of the games last year.
The fans thought there would be some hope coming off a win against in-state rival New Mexico State Aggies last week.
The increased crowds expected at Saturday's game resulted in a much heavier police presence at University Stadium.
Increased excitement surrounding this season's team brought in larger crowds.
Lobo fans say they are anxious to see what the team does next.
"I think they made tremendous strides. I think they're going to be alright," a Lobo fan said.
"They came back against a nationally ranked team. I mean, that is pretty cool," a Lobo fan said.
They will be coming back next home game against Texas State and ex-Lobo coach Dennis "Coach Fran" Franchione for homecoming next Saturday at University Stadium starting at 4 p.m.
