ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - On the practice field, the Albuquerque High School Bulldogs football team doesn't look like a loser.
But the results on the field have been disastrous.
In the 2010 season opener, Albuquerque High topped Atrisco Heritage Academy. The Bulldogs haven't won a single game since,
At 36 losses in a row that's one shy of Santa Fe High's state record of 37, set in the 1990s.
During the 2013 campaign so far, the team has lost seven games by decisive margins in each. Five of those games have been shutout losses.
In total, AHS has scored just 40 points while giving up 356 to their opponents.
"They're desensitized to losing. It doesn't phase them at this point," said head coach Tim Garro, in his first year with the squad.
The weekly losses have led to some trash talk on the field.
"Worst team out there, worst in the state, never amount to nothing, just stuff like that," said Michael Garcia, a sophomore center. "It can get to you."
Despite what the scoreboard's shown, Garro says he's seen a lot of improvement in his team this year.
"I remember early on we were going to run a quarterback sneak, and the quarterback asked, 'Who runs it?'" Garro said. "We realize you got to walk before you can run, and so we're still in the toddler stage."
The team's young talent hopes their hard work pays off and will help turn AHS into a winner on the field someday soon.
"I think we'll be pretty good," said David Marquez-Hernandez, a freshman linebacker who believes his team will be a contender by the time he's a senior. "Hopefully state."
But right now, the team has its eyes on Friday's showdown. Coincidentally, it comes against Atrisco Heritage Academy, the same team that gave AHS its last win.
If the Bulldogs drop that game, they would tie the record and be in line to break it on Halloween night against West Mesa High School.
