AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) - Two of the biggest complaints about golf is that its not available for everyone, and takes too long to play.
On Monday, a program that is based on making the game available to those that might not otherwise get a chance to put a club in their hand, benefited from a group of pros who played at a break-neck pace in Central Texas.
From sunrise through sunset, and well into the night, with glow-in-the-dark golf balls and friends and family serving as the guiding light, a foursome of area club pros were on a mission to break a Guinness world record for most golf holes played by a four-ball, in 24 hours, in a cart.
"This is awesome," said Mike Sizemore, Barton Creek's club director. "This is how golf should be played."
"This experience is definitely crazy, but it's a lot easier than I thought it was gonna be," said Bryan Brenner, the University of Texas Golf Club assistant pro. "It's been fun for sure."
The previous record of 234 holes was set by a group in Canada in 2008.
Benner, Sizemore, Jennifer Maccurrach and Aaron Chilek broke the record, playing 243 holes in just more than 18 hours, thanks to a blistering pace of about 18 holes every 70 minutes.
"To be a golf pro and to ever hear anybody say anything about slow play again, is gonna be really tough, for sure," Brenner said. "So the next time somebody is playing golf in four-and-a-half hours, we're gonna have this little talk about our golf marathon."
The event was to help raise money for the First Tee of Greater Austin.
"You know, I try to take advantage of the par fives," Sizemore said of his game. "That's where I'm really gonna make all the money for the kids...we're having a good time."
