HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii women's volleyball Dave Shoji broke the NCAA Division I victory record Friday night, leading the Rainbow Wahine past Santa Clara for No. 1,107.
Shoji broke a tie with retired UCLA coach Andy Banachowski for the record.
According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (http://bit.ly/1e3K1KM), Shoji called Banachowski down to the court for the celebration.
Shoji said he was humbled and honored to have broken the record. He also thanked players present and past in front of roughly 6,000 people at Stan Sheriff Center.
The team covered Shoji in silly string and confetti to celebrate.
Hawaii beat Santa Clara 25-23, 25-15, 23-25, 25-17.
Senior All-American Emily Hartong had a match-high 20 kills and team-high 14 digs.
