NEW YORK (AP) — The top two Republican candidates for New York City mayor are facing each other one last time before the party primary in an at-times testy debate.
Ex-MTA chairman Joe Lhota and billionaire grocery store magnate John Catsimatidis (kat-sih-mah-TEE'-dihz) met in Sunday's debate and touched on topics including the New York Police Department's policies and each other's strengths and weaknesses.
Polls show Lhota with a consistent lead going into the debate. But Catsimatidis has blanketed the airwaves with ads, and a strong debate performance could affect the outcome of the primary. Low Republican turnout is expected in the heavily Democratic city.
Among Democrats, Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH'-zee-oh) has surged in the polls.
The general election is Nov. 5.
