ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A mother of four is behind bars after rolling her vehicle overnight with her kids inside.
Police allege Juana Vargas, 31, was high on drugs and driving at high speed when she tried to turn from Ladera Road NW onto Tessa Drive at about 2:30 a.m. Evidence at the scene showed she lost control and hit a pole before the car rolled.
The first officers on the scene found the car on its roof and feared the worst.
"They were very concerned that they were going to be dealing with possibly some very tragic, gruesome injuries," said Tasia Martinez of the Albuquerque Police Department.
Instead, they say, everyone was lucky to walk away with minor injuries. Two of the four kids, ages 11, 6, 5 and 1 month, were not belted in, according to police.
"She had a complete disregard for her children's safety," Martinez said.
Police say this is where the frustration starts to set in. Vargas is no stranger to getting behind the wheel when she shouldn't.
“She has at least two prior DWIs," Martinez said. "She was investigated for DRE last night meaning that officers are suspecting that she was under the influence of intoxicating drugs during the time of the crash."
Vargas was booked and charged with her first DWI in 2010.
Police say she also had numerous outstanding warrants after failing to appear on charges including driving with a suspended license and driving with an unrestrained child.
Martinez is hoping she gets the help she needs.
“Obviously, she hasn't learned that lesson,” Martinez said. “She didn't even appear in court for those previous offenses, and here she is again quite nearly taking the lives of her four small children.”
Vargas is facing four felony counts of child abuse.
Children, Youth and Families Department said they will be investigating.
Vargas is being held at Metropolitan Detention Center on a $20,000 bond.
Vargas told officers she was on two separate prescription drugs during the crash. One is used to help heroin users clean up and the other is used to treat bipolar disorder.
