BERNALILLO, N.M. (KRQE) - U.S. Highway 550 has reopened after a mobile home in transit snagged a power line in Bernalillo Thursday morning snapping a power pole that killed the driver of a a passing pickup truck.
Reynaldo Arriola, 57, of Placitas was alone in the pickup, according to New Mexico State Police.
The incident happened about 10:30 p.m. on U.S. 550 at Camino del Pueblo, Bernalillo's main north-south street, and blocked the main connection between northern Rio Rancho and Interstate 25. The intersection remained closed until just before 5 p.m. after the investigation was completed and a new pole and temporary traffic signal installed.
The incident happened at the western end of the construction zone associated with rebuilding the I-25-U.S. 550 interchange, which includes reconfiguring the intersection where the crash occurred.
During the closure, traffic was diverted to town streets between Camino Don Tomas on the west and the South Bernalillo exit on I-25.
Sky News 13 video from the scene showed the mobile home section headed westbound and stopped in the middle of the intersection with the downed pole and signal on the pavement beside it. The eastbound pickup truck was on the shoulder east of the intersection with the roof caved in and a tarp covering the cab.
Damage also could be seen near the peak of the mobile home where the roof caught the cable.
State Police are investigating whether the move of the mobile home was properly permitted and if the cables to the temporary signal were properly installed.
