ALBUQUERQUE - A two-vehicle crash at Atrisco Vista NW and Interstate 40 has killed one person and injured others, authorities confirm.
The crash happened just after noon when a pickup truck exiting westbound I-40 failed to stop for the stop sign at Atrisco Vista and was hit by a southbound car, according to Bernalillo County sheriff's Sgt. Aaron Williamson. The truck rolled, and its passenger died at the scene, he said.
The truck driver and three people in the car suffered injuries described as not life-threatening, Williamson added.
Deputies later identified the driver of the truck as Frank Apachee Jr., 34, and said the victim was Frank Apachee Sr., who had been riding in the back seat of the truck. The elder Apachee died at the scene.
After Apachee Jr. was released from UNM Hospital, he was charged with vehicular homicide and great bodily harm by vehicle and booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center under an $80,000 bond. The investigation was continuing, but deputies said they suspect alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
As of 1 p.m. Atrisco Vista remained closed over I-40 as are the westbound I-40 exit and entrance ramps. Atrisco Vista, formerly known as Paseo del Volcan, is the exit to the the Double Eagle II Airport on the north and the landfill and detention center on the south.
KRQE News 13 has a crew at the scene and will update this report as more information becomes available.
