ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Soon the buildings at Central New Mexico Community College could have the names of people and companies plastered on buildings on all of its campuses.
CNM is selling off the naming rights to its facilities to raise scholarship money.
The CNM Foundation could sell names to 300 of its facilities throughout its seven campuses in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho.
"This is a great opportunity to invest in our economy and the quality of tomorrow's workforce,” said Lisa McCollough, executive director of CNM Foundation.
The CNM Foundation helps fund student programs and scholarships which is what McCullough says 100 percent of the sponsorship money will go toward.
The foundation has already raised $1 million in donations. They're aiming for $9 million more over the next two years.
"This is a great opportunity for companies to leave a legacy in our community,” said McCollough.
But this also could open up the possibility for a PR disaster, like the Houston Astro's baseball field formally named after Enron, the company now notorious for a large-scale fraud scandal.
In New Mexico, the Hispanic Cultural Center's Torreon honored former state Sen. Manny Aragon until he went to prison for accepting bribes in a corruption scandal.
CNM officials say they reserve the right to remove any name if circumstances warrant it, but think the campaign will do more good than bad.
"We think this is going to have an impact on our graduation rates because the number one reason students drop out of school is unforeseen financial obstacles,” McCollough said.
UNM says naming its facilities or programs after people is one of the highest honors. The person must have dedicated extraordinary service or support to the university and have high standards of personal and professional ethics.
The University of New Mexico Hospital has Barbara and Bill Richardson's name on it which recognizes the former governor. UNM is currently shopping around for a sponsor for The Pit.
