SANTA FE (KRQE) - A Santa Fe police captain is accused of releasing a seized truck back to an acquaintance, a repeat drunken-driving suspect.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports Capt. Aric Wheeler is now being investigated by internal affairs.
Documents obtained by the newspaper say Wheeler reportedly allowed Carlos Carrillo to remove his pickup truck from the city impound lot.
The truck was seized after Carrillo was arrested earlier this month on charges of aggravated DWI, his third arrest.
A Santa Fe city attorney says Wheeler doesn't have the authority to approve the release of an impounded vehicle.
Wheeler told KRQE News 13 he will be cleared.
"I stand by my statement that I welcome this investigation," he said. "Unfortunately there has to be an investigation, and it doesn't make me happy, but once the investigation is over I'll be happy because it will exonerate me."
