ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A hike with grandpa up the Sandia Mountains turned into quite the adventure Friday.
The 82-year-old hiker slipped and fell sparking a full search-and-rescue response to bring him to safety.
Officials say Charles Arnold fell and hit his head while hiking with his grandchildren down from TWA Canyon, site of a 1955 airliner crash below the aerial-tram line in Sandia Mountains.
The good news is, he is fine.
New Mexico Search and Rescue, National Guard, the Albuquerque Fire Department and Albuquerque Police Department all rushed to the scene.
It was a large crew because initial reports said the Albuquerque man had a head laceration with severe bleeding.
Rescuers say Arnold fell with about a 1 1/2 miles left to get to the bottom of the trail.
When they got there, he was in much better shape than they were expecting.
"After getting medical treatment and being rehydrated, he was able to walk down most of the way, and we put him in a vehicle to come down the last little part," said Bob Baker, incident commander with NMSAR.
Crews loaded Arnold up on a stretcher to take him to the hospital in an ambulance just as a precaution. But they say he will be fine.
Arnold, who Baker says is just days away from his 83rd birthday, hikes often and has done this trail before.
Search and Rescue says Arnold and his grandkids were well-prepared with food, water and equipment.
In fact, they say Arnold's granddaughter had some medical and rescue training, so she was able to help before rescuers arrived.
In addition to SAR volunteers, the New Mexico National Guard and Cibola National Forest personnel assisted in the rescue. Albuquerque Police Department Open Space rangers and the Albuquerque Fire Department also were present.
Some brazen thieves made off with a man's prized possession, and now the victim is hoping for some holiday justice. Little did the suspects' know, their entire crime was caught on camera.
