ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The City of Albuquerque is partnering with the Bernalillo County to send methane gas produced by rotting garbage at the dump to heat water at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
A two-mile pipeline will ship the gas to power boilers to heat water which can be used in showers and cleaning.
The project will help the city decrease gas burn-off and save money in electricity at the jail.
Jill Holbert with the Solid Waste Management Department says they are in the early stages of methane gas production and future plans to start generating electricity.
There will be enough gas to run this project for at least 100 years.
