ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Residents in a Foothills neighborhood woke up to a bear on the loose Tuesday morning.
A neighbor was walking her dog in the area of Paseo Del Norte and Tramway at around 8:30 a.m. when she heard branches snapping.
She looked around and finally up to see the young bear about 30 feet up tree in a neighbor's backyard.
New Mexico Game and Fish arrived shortly after and tranquilized the 2-year-old female bear just before 10 a.m.
But rather than dozing off and falling out of the tree, the bear decided to take a nap.
Thirty minutes later, she was pushed out on to the ground, landing on a pillow pad.
Officials say they have been after this bear for quite some time.
"We had reports of this bear in this area for about a week. It was spotted near Big Horn Ridge," John Martsh said. "We're glad we captured it today.'
The bear is okay and wasn't injured in the fall.
Initial reports estimated it was about 300 pounds. Once on the ground, the bear was clearly much smaller.
This bear will be getting a new home Tuesday afternoon.
Wardens are taking it to the Blue Bird Mesa in the Santa Fe National Park. There, she should not find her way into anyone's backyard.
This is the latest in a string of bear captures and sightings in the metro area.
Game and Fish officials say a lack of food and water are reasons why so many wild animals are coming down from the mountains.
