ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A man described as a well-known thief outdid himself last week when he nearly severed his arm with a bullet while committing another crime, according to the Torrance County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Heath White said deputies responding Thursday to a report of shots being fired near Tajique found a badly injured Brian Torrez.
Deputies determined Torrez was in the process of stealing wood when he shot himself with a rifle.
The rifle turned out to be stolen as was the car Torrez was driving, White said.
Torrez is in the hospital where doctors are trying to determine if his arm can be saved.
His next stop from there is jail.
