ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Santa Fe Police found two dogs dead inside a filthy house in the city and they think the animals starved after being left for more than a month without any food or water.
Neighbors called police after noticing the usually noisy dogs hadn't barked in about six weeks.
When police showed up Saturday they found a house covered in dog feces and urine. The dogs were so malnourished their bones were visible in evidence pictures. They had been dead for at least a month because their bodies were decomposing and filled with maggots.
The dogs had no food, no water and no way to relieve themselves outside.
Neighbors told KRQE News 13 they thought the dog's owner moved because they had not seen him in at least two months.
One of the dogs was wearing a collar. Her name was Georgia, and she was registered to their suspect.
Police tried to contact him without luck, but they did talk to his mother who said she spoke with him earlier in the day.
She does not know where he is, but said he was fine.
Usually animal cruelty is a misdemeanor, but police say as soon as they get a hold of this irresponsible owner, they plan to push for felony charges because the abuse is so severe.
