CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) - A Carlsbad dog is scheduled to be euthanized after it attacked a 2-year-old boy not once, but twice last week, leaving the child with scars.
The adult pit bull bit off part of the boy's face.
"The first bite took out a chunk of the face of the child. It was exposing some of the jaw line and some of the muscle tissue inside the child's face," said Carlsbad Police Sgt. Jason Griffin. "The second lunge caused lacerations above the child's eye."
Griffin said the 2-year-old was with his parents at a friend's house on the 1500 block of West Greene Road on July 10.
When the friend, Amanda Sosa, went outside to throw away the trash, the toddler followed.
According to the criminal complaint, the family's pit bull started growling at the little boy.
The dog then lunged and tore off a large chunk of his flesh.
Sosa immediately picked the boy up and started kicking the dog, but the pit bull charged again, and this time, bit off an area above the boy's left eye.
The boy's father heard yelling from the backyard, ran outside and pulled the dog by the collar so his son could run free.
Police officials say the toddler was sent to a Lubbock hospital to see a pediatric specialist. The pit bull is undergoing a 10-day quarantine and will be euthanized once that is complete.
According to Carlsbad police, no charges can be filed against the dog's owner because the attack happened on the owner's property.
The 2-year-old's parents did not respond to phone calls Thursday.
