ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The ringleader of a New Mexico drug ring linked to a Mexican cartel has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.
Homero Varela pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking and money laundering charges in January.
Investigators seized millions of dollars worth of cocaine, meth, marijuana, cash and weapons last year after raids in Albuquerque and Edgewood all linked to Mexico's Sinola cartel.
Former Albuquerque firefighter Steve Chavez also admitted in April to hiding money for the cartel. He hasn't been sentenced yet.
