BELEN, N.M. (KRQE) - Two women and a girl are being held after a high-speed chase ended Friday with the discovery of a body in the trunk of their car.
It all started around 3:30 p.m. Friday on Interstate 25 South near Los Lunas when State Police tried to pull the car over for some sort of traffic violation.
That chase reached speeds up to 100 mph ended about 12 miles later when they crashed into another car at the busy intersection of Main Street and Reinken Avenue in Belen.
"They went ahead and initiated a felony stop; pulled out three females," said State Police Sgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez. "Upon a security sweep, they located a deceased subject."
The suspects were later identified as Ashley Gurulé, 20, Jennifer McKee, 18, and Julia Martinez, 16. The adults have been charged with murder and the girl with conspiracy.
Details of the homicide have not been released.
Witnesses got a look at the aftermath of the pursuit.
"We looked outside and saw some people on the ground. They had them cuffed. Three girls, looked 21 years old. They looked young. Crazy how they'd throw their lives away that quickly," said witness Ray Feldbush.
State Police are investigating this as a homicide but also as a police shooting.
At one point during the chase an officer fired at the car when it came it him.
KRQE News 13 saw what appeared to be two bullet holes in the front window of the car on the driver's side.
Late Friday State Police were still waiting on a search warrant to get back into the car. When they get that, the body will go to OMI.
