DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — The Arab American National Museum has earned a coveted piece of industry credibility: accreditation.
The museum in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn planned to announce Monday that it's been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The industry group says about 6 percent of the United States' roughly 17,500 museums have received the recognition.
The accreditation process examines all aspects of a museum's operation. It includes a year of self-study by the museum and a visit by a team of peer reviewers, and can take several years to achieve.
Museum spokeswoman Kim Silarski says accreditation is an important "seal of approval" for funding organizations, lenders of art and objects, and the public at large.
The museum opened in 2005, and Silarski says it has been working toward accreditation since 2007.
