Wind leaves thousands without power

Crews rush to restore power and clear fallen trees

TIJERAS, N.M. (KRQE) - PNM is still working to restore power to hundreds of customers across the state following wild winds Sunday.

Some customers have been without power for more than 24-hours and it could be another day until their power comes back on.

At the peak of the outage, 33,000 customers were in the dark. PNM called in 25 extra crews to fix the problem. They say downed poles and spilt lines caused the massive mess.

Monday morning the bulk of the outages were in the Tijeras area.

"It's been pretty bad. We have no heat. We're not able to take showers. We can't even cook," said Star Brown who runs the Nature Point event center in Tijeras.

She hauled in backup generators to power the refrigerators in the center and prevent food from spoiling. Her power was out for a full day.

Energy was restored to most of the affected areas just before noon Monday, but that still left thousands without heat and even water for those who get H2O from wells.

As of 5 p.m. Monday 320 customers were still affected by the outages. PNM says their power might not be restored until Tuesday afternoon. That's because crews are having to go door to door to fix those connections. The outages span from Santa Fe to Silver City.
