JEMEZ SPRINGS, N.M. (KRQE) - A prescribed burn in the Jemez Mountains is generating the smoke visible between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
On Wednesday 1,200 acres in that part of the Santa Fe National Forest were treated as part of a plan to reduce wildfire threats and improve forest habitat.
Firefighters monitored the project overnight, and crews were back out on Thursday.
They said the winds are just high enough to carry the fire to the areas where they want it.
Fire officials also said the fire will be visible at night and there will be a lot of smoke.
The burn involves about 7,300 acres and may take as many as five days to complete.
