U.S. 550 open again through Bernalillo

Damaged water main blocked lanes for three days

BERNALILLO, N.M. (KRQE) - After three days of extra frustration commuters using U.S. Highway 550 through Bernalillo should only expect the usual backups Friday afternoon.

The two eastbound lanes past the crater from a damaged water main were open in time for the morning commute Friday, and the westbound lanes have now been repaved and opened in time for the afternoon rush.

Problems began Tuesday afternoon with a leaking water main under the westbound lanes just east of the Camino del Pueblo intersection.

The problem appeared fixed, but new issues arose early Wednesday morning when a valve failed.

The water line provided service to about 70 percent of Bernalillo.  The failure shut down businesses and schools and left about 6,500 people without water.

U.S. 550 is the only highway and Rio Grande crossing linking northern Rio Rancho and Interstate 25.
