Driver punches into Waffle House

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An ordinary breakfast at the Waffle House nearly turned deadly when a driver plowed into the front of the restaurant.

Albuquerque police say it's amazing no one got hurt.

Witnesses say the 86-year-old driver came within inches of hitting restaurant patrons.

"We were sitting back there and we heard this big old bang and the car go through,” said employee Petra Chavez.

A group of tourists had just sat down to breakfast when a woman driving a Subaru pulled up to the Waffle House on Central and Tramway - and kept going.

"She said she accidentally hit the gas instead of the breaks,” said employee Heather Love.

The 85-year-old driver just missed a bus load of tourists.

But no one was hurt.

And since Waffle House is always open - they stayed open.

“Waffle House never closes. We never close. We just put something up there,” said Chavez.

As for the driver, witnesses say she backed her car up and walked inside to get some coffee as if nothing had happened.

It's unclear whether the woman was cited for anything.
