UNM to beef up security at Lobo game

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Officials are making a change in response to Saturday’s shooting at the Lobo-Aggie game in Las Cruces and it is something UNM officials hope will make a big difference.

There are a lot of officers at the stadium before and after the game, but come Saturday those officers will be sticking around a bit longer.

Saturday night's Lobos-Aggies game is one many will not soon forget after a woman was shot while at the stadium in Las Cruces.

“I couldn't believe it…I said oh my god who would be shooting?” shooting victim, Patsy Bejerano, said. “Maybe a fan was mad because they were losing, I don't know.”

UNM student Isaac Lira and his friends were at that game and say they never saw it coming.

"Being like from UNM, going to the tail gate I mean there was other fans were kind of aggressive but it wasn't to the extent that they were going to shoot…or any acts of violence like that,” UNM student, Isaac Lira, said.

In light of what happened in Las Cruces, UNM is taking additional precautions at this Saturday’s home game.

Typically there are a lot of officers before kickoff but they thin out once the game gets underway.

From now on the police presence will stay the same from beginning to end.

Some students say while they are not worried someone will fire off a gun on Saturday, they do think the extra police won’t hurt.

“I think that by having more police presence there's much less of a chance of that actually happening because people actually think of the consequences rather than just go crazy and shoot," UNM student, Marycruz Anaya, said.

All the students KRQE News 13 spoke with said extra police or not they still planned to be here Saturday when the Lobos take on Boise State.

The victim in that shooting is okay.

Police have not identified the shooter.
