ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Any fan knows parking for the big game can be a big mess, but it's an even bigger mess for people who live near University Stadium.

They were extra worried Saturday's high turnout would translate into lots of drama in their driveways, but things were surprisingly smooth.

Streets of neighborhoods flooded with cars, fans walking blocks just to get a seat, described game day at University Stadium.

"We're super excited about the Lobo game and from the cheering that I'm hearing I think we're doing something," said Paula Welsh.

The Lobos brought home a big win Saturday.

Welsh lives just East of the field. She was anxious about the game because in the past parking and fans have been haven't been so nice. Residents have had some simple requests.

"Please don't park on the sidewalk. Please don't block people's driveways," Welsh said.

They also worry about trash and public urination.

"If you have to go to the bathroom, use the sand can that's provided across the street and not the street," Welsh said.

This year Welsh said she's pleasantly surprised.

"It's been very positive APD has done a wonderful job," Welsh said. "I've even seen other city parking enforcement in the area. They're really doing a good job."

JRQE News 13 watched as police handed out ticket after ticket after ticket. Authorities cited fans for parking illegally, too close to stop signs and too close to resident's driveways.

Also police arrested one man who appeared to be intoxicated, making sure area streets were safe.

Neighbors can expect even more help as the season progresses. According to a UNM Spokesperson, permits will soon be given to people who want to park in the neighborhoods starting Sept. 29. UNM will also pay for signs reminding fans they need a permit to park there on game day.

KRQE News 13 did hear complaints from some residents saying they were given tickets for parking on their own streets. Police say that's because they were either blocking their own driveways or too close to stop signs.
