ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - UNM has suspended a lobo football player just days before the first game because he was arrested for driving drunk.

Albuquerque police say Devonta Tabannah was arrested Sunday in downtown Albuquerque. The criminal complaint says he ran a red light and nearly hit a police officer. Cops say Tabannah didn't have a license and is only 20-years-old.

According to UNM’s website, in 2011 Tabannah played six games but missed the last five because of knee and ankle injuries. Coach Bob Davie says Tabannah had earned a spot as the starting corner back and punt returner. But he won't be playing this Saturday against Southern.

Davie told News 13, "I am glad the situation wasn't worse than it was, in that it could have been a catastrophic kind of thing."

He says he hasn't decided how long the Sophomore Mike Locksley recruit will be suspended. He would not go into details of about Tabannah's Saturday night.
