The Los Alamos Monitor reports Chief Wayne Torpy returned to his post this week.
The 54-year-old Torpy took medical leave last month – his medical condition has not been released.
Torpy told the Monitor his recovery has not been easy he will most likely need more time off in the coming weeks ahead.
Torpy has led the department since 2005.
