Free dog adoption event is a success

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Few dogs were left without homes Monday after the city’s free adoption event this weekend.

A total of 374 dogs were adopted over the weekend and shelter officials say they plan to keep tabs on the dogs to make sure none of them are abused and hope to keep them from ending back up at the shelter.

Usually the shelter adopts out 100 animals per week.

Adoption fees were waived this weekend for all dogs a year-old or older but officials say their pre-adoption pre-screening process was still in place this weekend, ensuring each pet got the perfect home for them.

Volunteers and employees at the shelter will be calling each of the dog’s new homes within the next two months to check up and make sure everything is going smoothly. They’ve also teamed up with Petco to help with that process. The pet store is offering one free hour of dog training to families who adopted through the event.

Cat lovers weren’t left out this weekend, they took home a total of 49 cats this weekend.
