AUSTIN (KXAN) - The bag monster tromped through Austin on Thursday - as his message was the most frightening thing about him.

Activist Andy Keller created the character to demonstrate the impact plastic bags are having on the planet.

"The bag monster is what the average American uses in one year in plastic bags," he said. "Five hundred, total. It's extremely hot out here and uncomfortable, but I'm out here to show all of Austin what it looks like. Behind me, I have 45,000 single-use plastic bags. This is what the average American uses in their lifetime."

The bag monster says each of those bags takes five hundred to a thousand years to break down. He's visiting cities across the country that are considering plastic bag bans .
