ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - New Mexicans are feeling the power of Powerball Wednesday.
Stores across the city are seeing record-high sales because of the record-high jackpot.
Right now it is the biggest jackpot in Powerball history at $550 million.
Workers at a locally owned store on Rio Grande near I-40 says there was a line of people waiting to buy tickets this morning before they opened.
They are not the only ones.
Nationally about 60 percent of sales occur on drawing day, so with a jackpot this big stores everywhere are packed.
A store at Candelaria and San Mateo says they sold about $500 worth of tickets by about ___ this morning. They expect to at least double that by the end of the day.
First-time player Steven Garcia says he sure would like to win it all.
“I would spoil my family, buy a large piece of land and create my own place,” Garcia said.
Store owner, Frias Albana, says it has been busy.
“It's going to be rough today…going to be like yesterday where we had over $2500 in sales,” Albana, said. “We expect to sell more tickets today. It's going to be a big day."
Gas station owners say the Powerball jackpot has given them a big boost in business.
The grand total is currently sitting at $550 million.
If no one wins Wednesday night, the prize gets even bigger for the next drawing Saturday.
The odds of winning are one in 175 million.
The drawing is held tonight at 8:59 p.m.
