ALBUQURQUE (KRQE) - An effort backed by Governor Susana Martinez, to hold back students who can't read at grade level before 4th grade, has been tabled by the House Education Committee.
Representative Mimi Stewart, of Albuquerque, who's the chairwoman of the education committee, says the bill would have required significant increases to school budgets.
A similar version of the bill is being considered in the state senate.
It was passed by the senate public affairs committee last week and now heads to the senate education committee for consideration.
