ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Gov. Susana Martinez is set to unveil a new system that would allow New Mexico residents to renew driver's licenses online rather than forcing them to renew at crowded Motor Vehicle Division offices.
Martinez is scheduled Wednesday to announce details of the new system at a press conference at the Albuquerque Montgomery Plaza MVD office.
The announcement comes after the Republican governor signaled Tuesday that she might compromise on changes to a state law that allows illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses. Previously, Martinez had shunned any efforts to amend the current state law other than absolute repeal over fraud concerns.
But Martinez told the Albuquerque Journal that she would consider legislation that creates a driver's permit for illegal immigrants that couldn't be used as identification.
