ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - There was a surprise discovery for the Bernalillo County clerk's office after it was revealed that not everyone's vote was counted days after the November election.

The deputy county clerk says workers found about 125 absentee ballots still in their envelopes and locked in a tub.

County workers spent the Friday night and Saturday morning counting the found ballots.

They are from voters in district 23.

There were no tight races in that district so the new count will not affect the outcome of any races.

But how did it happen?

“This process obviously did not work the way it was supposed to work and we're going to go make sure look at this process to make sure this never happens again,” Deputy County Clerk, Roman Montoya, said.

The county clerk's office says it did not even know the ballots were missing.

They say that responsibility lies with the absentee precinct judge and board, but the clerk's office is investigating.
