SANTA FE (KRQE) - A proposal to lessen the penalties for possession of marijuana continues to make its way through the Legislature.
On Monday the House passed the measure that would impose civil-penalty fines on adults convicted a first time for having up to four ounces of marijuana.
Jail time would be eliminated for possessing up to eight ounces.
Supporters said reduced penalties would allow law enforcement to focus on more serious crimes.
Opponents said the proposal would send the message that it's OK to use marijuana.
The proposal now goes to the Senate.
