SANTA FE (KRQE) - The Democratic Party of Santa Fe County is leaning on one of its candidates to drop out of the race for county treasurer after he was charged with misdemeanor fraud.

Oliver Garcia, currently deputy county treasurer, is accused of using bogus coupons to obtain at least 10 free car washes valued at $17 apiece.

Santa Fe police said Garcia admitted using the coupons but denied making them.  Other county employees may also be charged in the scam, police added.

On Saturday the county party issued a statement saying in part, "As a party we need to offer candidates in November who are ethical and committed to public service."

So far there has been no response from Garcia.

The party's other primary candidate is Patrick Varela, a state Department of Transportation manager.

No Republican filed for the office.
