SANTA FE (KRQE) - Two lawmakers plan to try again this year to pass a statewide ban on texting while driving.
Republican Rep. James Smith of Albuquerque has a bill to make it punishable by a $100 fine.
A bill by Democratic Sen. Peter Wirth of Santa Fe would hit offenders with a $300 fine.
Four previous efforts to pass a statewide ban have failed.
New Mexico is one of only 11 states that still allow texting while driving.
