Artesia adopts "in God We Trust" logo

ARTESIA, N.M. (AP) - Artesia's City Council has voted to add "In God We Trust" to the city's official logo.

The Artesia Daily Press reports Mayor Phillip Burch told fellow councilors Tuesday he got the idea after meeting officials from Bakersfield, Calif., who have been urging cities to adopt the phrase.

He says the group was concerned legislators were getting away from the nation's official motto.

Bakersfield Councilwoman Jacquie Sullivan conceived the effort in 2001 and got her city to post the phrase in its Council chambers. She later founded In God We Trust America Inc. to push the idea nationally.

The Bakersfield Californian newspaper says more than 300 municipalities in 12 states have adopted the idea.

Burch says he believes Artesia is the first city in New Mexico to adopt the motto.
