ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - If there were a major disaster or emergency, would the Veterans Administration health system be able to handle it?

The New Mexico VA health care system is hosting a national emergency medical response team exercise this week.

It focuses on preparing VA emergency responders to deal with a patient surge using the new Base-X shelter system . This system is an alternative care site.

"So they are able to pull it out, say look what we're doing as it relates to medical surge, pandemic flu planning," said Kerry Reeve, phoenix-based VA area emergency manager. "We can use it for many, many different capabilities."

Similar Base-X units have been used by U.S. military surgical staff in Afghanistan.

The initial set up will house 30 patient beds, but it can be expanded to about 250 beds.
