ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Four New Mexico infants have been hospitalized in the past month for whooping cough.

The state health department says the sick children were all less than 4-months-old and lived in Sandoval, Valencia, and Dona Ana Counties.

The highly contagious respiratory infection is usually contracted by a family member and can be prevented with immunization.

Infants can not get a shot until they are 2-months-old and are not fully protected until getting a third dose at 6-months-old.
