ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Post traumatic stress disorder , it's one of the most detrimental ailments affecting many soldiers returning from serving their country in war. Representative Dianne Miller Hamilton has written a bill which could provide funding for a pilot project surrounding virtual reality therapy.

Therapists say virtual reality treatments are still being researched, but they more than welcome any new therapies to cure former soldiers.

Many veterans who return from war time service experience the disorder and currently there are a number of different treatments to help them.

Therapists at Presbyterian Medical Services say they focus on about three different types of treatments. The benefits of a virtual reality treatment as spelled out in the bill before legislators shows that it could be mobile, meaning another way to reach out to patients who might find it hard to get to the hospitals for treatment.

If it's proven to be effective, this could be another valuable tool for therapists to add to the many treatments for PTSD patients.

Also in the bill, legislators say about $250,000 will be needed to pay for the pilot project. That money will come from the state's general fund. The bill is currently in a house education committee.
