ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The New Mexico Department of Health is issuing an alert for parents and pregnant woman, telling them to protect their children from themselves.

They are saying parents should get the whooping cough vaccine.

Whooping cough is common, highly contagious and even deadly.

The idea is to vaccinate new moms and dads so they won't pass it on to their babies.

Officials say 874 whooping cough cases were reported to health officials in New Mexico last year.

That's three times more cases than the previous year.

The CDC recommends booster shots for both adults and teens.
