ESPAÑOLA, N.M. (KRQE) - New Mexico State Police are investigating a police shooting at the intersection of Highway 68 and Highway 76 in Española.

A man driving a Chevrolet Silverado fled a hit-and-run accident in downtown Española Friday evening ramming into multiple vehicles along the way, according to State Police Lt. Robert McDonald.

The Española Police Department and the Rio Arriba County Sheriff's Department both responded to the call with one or both agencies shooting the suspect's vehicle multiple times taking out the tires and the engine.

The suspect has been taken into custody, and no police officers were hurt according to sheriff's spokesperson Jake Arnold.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m.

Police asked residents to avoid the area of Highway 68 and Highway 76 during the investigation.
