Cousins who started Wallow Fire ordered to pay $3.7M

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Two cousins who accidentally started the largest wildfire in Arizona history have been ordered to pay $3.7 million in restitution.

The Wallow Fire destroyed 840 square miles in Arizona and New Mexico last summer.

The US Forest Service is not demanding the $79 million it actually cost to fight the fire.

David and Caleb Malboeuf pleaded guilty to leaving a campfire unattended and failing to clear the brush from around it.

Their lawyers say it's unlikely they will ever be able to pay the full amount in their lifetimes.
