AUSTIN (KXAN) - There are multiple steps a pet owner can take to make sure their four-legged friends are comfortable during Halloween. The Austin Humane Society outlined the best practices during the holiday.

  • Take your dog on a walk to burn off some energy and to relax them
  • Crate the dog or cat in a safe place with the door closed. Put their favorite toy in the crate with them, so they feel comfortable. Keep visiting the room to reassure them
  • Do not let the animal roam in your backyard as their noises may scare trick-or-treaters.
  • Place all candy out of reach. Candy can be fatal to dogs and wrappers can choke an animal if they ingest it.
  • All decorations should be removed in a room where the pet has access. Dogs with wagging tails may knock a cord, thus knocking over a candle lit on the tabletop.

Remember that you understand people are in costumes, but some costumes may frighten your pet. If you decide to dress your pup or kitten up, make sure their costume is safe. Nothing with elastic or loose pieces that could be chewed on or be a choking hazard. Scary noises can also scare your pet.
