AUSTIN (AP) - The brother of two alleged leaders in the Zetas drug cartel has been ordered detained in Texas while he faces accusations that he was involved in a money laundering scheme centered on an Oklahoma horse ranch.
Jose Trevino Morales pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a federal money laundering charge.
The Austin American-Statesman reported that Trevino's attorney, David Finn, argued during Tuesday's hearing that authorities were trying to "tar and feather" Trevino because his brothers were allegedly involved in the Mexican cartel.
Two of Trevino's brothers are reputed to be cartel leaders. Both are also indicted.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Lane said no evidence suggested Jose Trevino was a risk to the community, though he thought Trevino could possibly flee to Mexico.
Finn told The Associated Press he plans to appeal.
