ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Several New Mexico counties and tribes will benefit from a federal grant aimed at preventing and ending homelessness among veterans.
The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs announced Tuesday that it has awarded a nearly $573,000 grant to Goodwill Industries of New Mexico. It is expected to serve 630 homeless and other veterans.
The grant is one of 151 awarded to non-profit community agencies nationwide.
The agencies use the funding to help veterans obtain public benefits and conduct outreach. Community-based groups also can offer temporary financial assistance for utility and rent payments, security deposits and moving costs.
