Cannon to survive proposed cuts

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE (KRQE) - Cannon Air Force Base is expected to survive the massive military budget cuts proposed by the pentagon.

Curry County Commissioner Caleb Chandler says he sees continued growth for the base because its mission fits the new pentagon philosophy of "smaller but smarter."

Cannon is home to the 27th special operations wing which operates versions of the C130 transport, the CV22 osprey, light transport aircraft and drones.

Base officials said in November that 74 planes are stationed at cannon, with the number expected to increase to 135 by 2014.

The new mission was assigned to canon in 2007 two years after it was recommended for closure.
